5 Top Resources for Small Businesses on National Cyber Security Month

October is full of special events and awareness programs. Some are tailored to be fun, like National Pizza Month and others are meant to be entertaining, such as having games scheduled by 4 professional sports leagues (football, basketball, hockey and baseball).

A serious topic that every business should be talking about this October is cyber security. The US has observed National Cyber Security Month since 2004. Here are some resources to help you communicate cyber security to your staff and your customers.

Stay Save Online Resource Library, sponsored by National Cyber Security Alliance

· Provides sample social media posts, tip sheets and infographics

Federal Trade Commission

· Blog post listing resources FTC offers on their website

Federal Bureau of Investigation

· News Post listing resources FBI offers on their website

Department of Homeland Security

· DHS cyber security website covers topics such as cyber insurance, incident response, and career development.

Better Business Bureau

· BBB site provides resource links, videos, and checklists.

For more in-depth information on developmental projects:

National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), part of US Dept. of Commerce. Their focus is on “accelerating the deployment and use of secure, standards-based technologies.”

For information on education and training efforts:

National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), part of the NIST. Their stated mission is “to energize and promote a robust network and an ecosystem of cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development.”

For information about Europe’s Cybersecurity Month (also in October):

European Cyber Security Month This is their 5th year and the site identifies 474 activities occurring in 35 countries. Some very useful information if you do business in Europe.
